The Medical Office Administration program at Southeastern Career Center focuses on the efficient and effective performance of administrative functions in the healthcare setting.

Medical Office Administration students receive instruction in every aspect of the Medical Receptionist/Front Desk position including computer applications, medical terminology, basic medical accounting/billing, basic medical coding, office procedures, managing medical records (informatics), communications with diverse populations, medical transcription, appointment scheduling and CPR/First Aid. Students can earn IC3 Certification (computer skills) and three credits for Introduction to Microcomputers from Ivy Tech. These credits will transfer to any Indiana post-secondary public school.

Upon successful completion of this program students may be employed in entry level front office positions in healthcare and should be able to:
• Apply legal/release of medical information guidelines
• Maintain patient records (electronic or paper)
• Apply communications theory and techniques to interact with diverse populations
• Administer CPR and First Aid in an emergency
• Demonstrate effective customer service skills
• Read, interpret, and pronounce common medical terms and abbreviations
• Transcribe doctor’s notes and reports for inclusion in a patient’s medical record
• Effectively manage doctor’s appointment scheduling
• Demonstrate effective telephone skills including triage


Further study is required at the community college or tech school level for successful employment as a Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Coding Specialist, Medical Records Specialist, or Medical Transcriptionist.

Those wishing to pursue careers in Practice Management or Medical Administration (licensed) should seek a Bachelor’s degree at the post-secondary level.

This course is an excellent opportunity for any student planning on pursuing a career or degree in any of the following areas:

• Pharmaceutical/Durable Medical Equipment companies
• Physician offices and clinics
• Veterinary care facilities
• Health Insurance companies


Dual college credits are available in this course with Vincennes University and Ivy Tech Community College. With the continually evolving complexity of the Medical Industry we encourage students to attend post-secondary educational programs to further their education.

Career and Technical Student Organization:

Business Professional of America (BPA) Students participate in community service projects and various skill competitions through BPA. Through these activities, students develop leadership and organizational skills, team building, interpersonal communications, and enhanced technical skills.
